Our Indirect Channels

About The Work

The complex distortions and entanglements that mark Fernando Orellana’s subjects reveal a sort of psychological portraiture that is at times funny, irreverent and wildly animated. Our Indirect Channels is a compilation of over one hundred pen and ink drawings that Orellana produced over a period of about a year. He made them while sitting in bars, coffee shops and airports, recording in an intuitive rather than representational manner the characters and conversations around him; the slices of eros and pathos that complicate us all. Although based upon modern Americans, these drawings echo depictions by earlier Americans – the Maya – whose fantastical renderings of gods and beasts continue to enchant and confound.
