American Gaki

About The Work

In Japanese folklore, the Gaki is a ghost that has an animalistic desire to consume its obsession. Driven mad by this pursuit, the Gaki’s only desire is to ceaselessly fill its belly with recent human corpses or offerings left for the dead. In a similar way, the male and female figures depicted in the video installation American Gaki are deformed and twisted by their hyper-indulgence and consumption of material. As they slowly rotate, entangling themselves in twine, their bodies dissolve, reforming into unrecognizable and warped masses.
